Stéphane CHAVANIS, born in 1956, is a contemporary artist known for his suspensions. After an introduction to drawing and classical sculpture, he extended his need to create firstly to free figuration (engravings, pastels, graffiti, resin sculptures), then focused on the neo-expressionist movement (paintings on panels of wood with the hands, bronze sculptures, salvaged assemblages, drawings made with wood dipped in ink) and finally he expresses himself through painted and sculpted representations (tree trunk, dissolved faces, etc.) close to Brut art…

He definitively abandoned figuration, notably through the destruction (reduction to ashes, fragmentation of sculptures) of his old works... and he moved towards conceptual art by suspending "the weight of the human condition and of existence in general" from through self-supporting sculptures/structures implementing the principle of suspension.

Parallel to this evolution and this passage from Figure to Concept, he deploys his need for creation in numerous fields... contemporary music, writing of plays and stories, photographs, design and research of forms, lithographs etc...

This long evolution that began in the 1980s… brings him to new recent works approaching geometric abstraction.
