Paris | Istanbul-based artist, Ulku Yilmaz, graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Fine Arts.
Her art is a visual dialogue in a fairy tale taking place in the dark abyss of subjectivity.

Seeking refuge is not merely finding a ready harbor; sometimes, it is building that harbor with one’s own hands, in the silent wait of every fold.
In this exhibition curated by me, Ülkü Y?lmaz strips the act of seeking refuge from its romantic tranquility and transforms it into a familiar space of confrontation—an inner room whose every corner we know by heart. Here, the heart is no longer just a watched image; it is a form of existence shaped with patience, anticipation, and discipline.
In Ülkü’s creative process, haste is suspended, and the rhythm of the hand slows down thought. The artist whispers the path to the heart in her own words:
“I no longer represent the heart directly… I repeat the path leading to it. For me, origami is a discipline of waiting rather than a form. It is a state where one does not distract oneself, but rather gathers oneself while waiting for something to happen.”
The absolute inclusiveness of black and the harshness of the nail driven into the heart remind us that seeking refuge is not only about protection but also about making peace with that very ache. For Ülkü, this process is more than a symbol:
“In this slowness, the heart is not imagined; it is prepared. Every fold is a span of time spent to be able to take refuge in that heart.”
